Sarah W asked:

Turkey is a unique country that lies along two continents. One side of Turkey is part of Europe, while the rest is geographically situated in West Asia, (also called the Middle East). Many languages are spoken in Turkey, such as: Greek, Armenian, Kurdish, Arabic and their official language, Turkish. A holiday in Turkey is the best way to see some beautiful sites and learn a great deal of history about Western Europe.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Travelers that come from Western Europe are not required to have a visa, except those coming from the UK. It is still possible to travel to Turkey by means of a train from Europe, albeit it is not very practical. This is done by those who are driven by the romantic notion of traveling by train, made famous by the movie, The Orient Express.

Arriving by plane is the fastest way to get to Turkey, and the most practical. Taxi services are widely available outside of the airports to welcome tourists.

It is a delight to travel around Turkey by bus. The buses offer accommodation equipped with air-conditioning and a great crew that attends to the needs of the passengers. They also offer food and drink, in addition to rest stops at restaurants every couple of hours or so.

Visitors who plan to drive while visiting this country should be very careful while on the road. Road accident rates are high in Turkey, especially since their roads are often left in poor condition.

Things to do in Turkey:

• Turkey offers a great cuisine derived from Arabic and Mediterranean style. These

dishes often contain meat such as lamb, which is a staple meat in turkey. A lot of spices are also used in their dishes. Turkish coffee is a very popular drink that must be sampled while visiting.

• Travelers who are planning to go to Turkey during winter can take advantage of the

numerous ski centers that are available. Rafting and yachting are also popular activities there, perfect during the summer and fall season.

• Tourists who want to absorb the culture and get better acquainted with Turkey’s history can visit some of their famous landmarks such as: Topkapi Palace, Ayasofya Museum, Mt Nemrut tours and the ancient City of Troy.

• Turkey is also famous for their diverse wildlife. It is one of only a few countries in the world that has preserved their ecological equilibrium. Many rare species here are

protected by the government.

• The natural landscape of this country is a treasure. Visitors can go on hiking trips to

partake in this wonderful outdoors experience.

There are so many wonderful things to see and do here. I hope this travel guide to Turkey has opened up this destination as a travel possibility. Many people take their holiday in Turkey to provide much needed rest and relaxation. So, if you are looking for something completely different and exotic, look no further than the only country in the world that lies on two continents.

Vikram Kumar asked:

Across the Greek Mainland is Turkey, one of the world’s ancient countries. It is the best place to be when you want the best of two different cultures, eastern mysticism, and western capitalism. Although Turkey straddles between two opposite worlds, it clearly defines and reinforces its culture and tradition, thus earning the sobriquet “One of the Exotic Places in the World.”

The abundance of old ruins in the provinces, the eerie but awesome stone “horses” of Cappadocia, beach resorts, and the metropolitan lifestyle in Turkey’s top three cities–Istanbul, Izmir, and Ankara–provide the best stage for a Mediterranean holiday all year round.

No global-trotting is complete without a visit to Turkey where ancient relics and some grand palaces and mosques of the Byzantine (AD 330) and Ottoman (thirteenth century) empires are still around. According to Turkey travel agencies, discovering Turkey is like taking a trip back to a past steeped in history, bloodshed, and romance.

Top Five Spots in Turkey

Turkey travel gurus recommend the following top 10 places to visit:

· Bodrum. It’s a mix of beach villages, heady nightlife, and spectacular shopping. It is here that one of the seven wonders of the ancient world is found, the tomb of King Mausolus.

· Marmaris. The resort offers a yacht marina and picnic spots but the best picnic grounds are found in the Ataturk National Park. Nearby towns offer stunning beaches for swimmers and sunbathers. Hospitality is aplenty at the shops where shopping tourists are welcomed with tea, and it is here that the best leather belts are found.

· Fethiye. The breathtaking lagoon makes a good stop for tourists who want some excellent diving. There is paragliding for the adventurers too. The nightlife is cosmopolitan, and there is traditional Turkish food to sample but there are several restaurants to suit different tastes. In the market stalls, carpets and jewelry of exquisite designs are available and the prices of Turkish products are very much cheaper.

· Altinkum. This is another resort town on the Aegean Sea with great water sports, beaches, and bars. The nearby Temple of Apollo built in the eighth century BC is one of the must-see places for history and archaeology buffs.

· Dalyan. This is an unspoiled fishing village. On the long strip of the beach, Loggerhead turtles lay their eggs. The place is also famous for the River of the Rustling Reeds, which boasts of a variety of birds and fish species.

Turkish Hotels

The Hilton hotel chain, Four Seasons, Hyatt, Conrad Hotel, Intercontinental, and the Ritz Carlton are available for tourists who want top accommodations. There are also locally owned and managed Turkish hotels, discount hotels, motels, and inns.

Tourists are advised to book in advance because the holiday season never stops in Turkey and Turkish hotels are fully-booked non-stop.

Getting There and Getting Around

U.S. tourists can get a direct flight from New York to Istanbul. The two Turkish carriers – Turkish Air and Pegasus Air offer connecting flights to Antalya, Bodrum, and Izmir. Rental cars are readily available in coastal airports. The street signs are all in English so there is no trouble finding one’s way around. There are ATMs, banks, gas stations and Starbucks Cafes in almost all important places.

Stuart S. Travel asked:

Well you won’t be traveling to Monaco and staying at a five star resort on a budget, will you? Maybe so! Mostly, traveling on a budget means finding the cheapest price for the experience you want.

When traveling on a budget it’s best to keep in mind the following points:

1. Travel in the off-peak seasons. You can save up to as much as fifty per cent off air flights and accommodation costs if you plan to travel in low season times.

2. Stay away from popular tourist spots (unless they are on your ‘must-see’ list). If you can go off the beaten track with your destinations, things can be cheaper to see and do and your cultural experiences will be richer.

3. Try camping. Not only is it the cheapest form of accommodation it’s a great way to get up close and personal to nature. It’s the best way to see National Parks and Heritage listed areas.

4. Look for special travel offers (or packages). But make sure you check everything that they include – and don’t include.

5. Invest in a travel pass where you are able. Most developed countries have a rail or bus transport system where you can obtain day, week or monthly passes that will get you around cheaply.

6. Get a work permit if you aim to gain employment while traveling overseas. Working can help subsidize places that aren’t so cheap, such as Europe and Australia.

7. Look for good exchange rates on the dollar. This may help you decide which country to travel to.

8. Think about shortening your visit to destinations that are expensive and increasing your length of stay in cheaper places.

9. Where possible use your credit card. The exchange rate is better.

10. When staying in a hotel, avoid paying for ‘extras’. Don’t touch anything from the honor bar. Don’t watch the in-house movies and don’t use the hotel phone. And try not to use room service too much!

On the world scene there are some great places to travel on a budget for under thirty dollars a day. In Asia you can try India, Laos, China, Cambodia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Thailand, Sumatra and Burma. In Central and South America you can visit El Salvador, Bolivia and Ecuador. If you are after a budget experience in the Pacific, try Fiji or New Zealand. Over in Africa there are some great budget destinations such as Kenya, Egypt, Morocco, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Ghana. Don’t forget the Middle East where places like Iran, Syria and Turkey provide excellent value for money and wonderful experiences for the budget traveler.

There is no ‘best place’ to travel on a budget. Just be prepared to look around, avoid the pitfalls of unwanted costs in package deals or hotel bookings. If you want to travel and your budget doesn’t meet your expectations, be flexible and see if there is somewhere cheaper you might like to experience. You could be pleasantly surprised with your stay in India or Iran, when you thought you wanted to go to Tahiti.

This article was provided by:

Stuart S.
Vikram Kumar asked:

Turkey is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Europe. It is known as a nation, wherein the east meets the west. The reason for this would be the geographical location of the country within the South-eastern part of Europe and South-western part of Asia. Because of this, it can be said that the nation has a rich blend of European and Asian culture. A visit to Turkey will let you experience modern Istanbul skyscrapers amidst the towering minarets of the city’s ancient mosques. The sights, festivities, and activities of Turkey are varied. A Turkey travel is a great way to escape from the bustle of your office work or from the dreary cold of winter.

No matter the type of your vacation, may it be a weekend-getaway with friends or a week-long stay with the entire family, a Turkey travel is a great choice. There are hundreds of reasons why the country is a wonderful location for relaxation and peace. One of the top reasons that make the nation popular among tourists is its rich culture. This is evident on its retail items, especially in Istanbul. The streets of the city are filled with bazaars and shops, where you can purchase the local produce of the city and the country. The backdrops of these amazing stalls are famous landmarks like Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Istanbul also has a vast selection of Turkish hotels for its tourists.

The second top reason that makes a Turkey travel perfect for the holidays is the wide stretch of coastline in the country. The southern coast of Turkey is comprised of sunny and clear beaches. This part of the country is called the Turkish Riviera. It is filled with popular resorts like Alanya, Side, Antalya, and Bodrum. These are resort towns, where you can take boat cruises along the Aegean and Mediterranean seas. If you want to take part of a cruise, you can simply look it up from Turkish hotels or travel agencies.

The third reason for the popularity of Turkey is the presence of several castles. The southern coastline of the country has crusader castles within towns like Alanya and Bodrum. You can check out the museums and historical ruins that are currently found in the castles. The crusader castles of Turkey have great importance for the nation because they depict the rich history that the country has gone through for several generations. But it is not only the historical importance that makes the castles famous among the tourists; it is also their amazing beauty.

The Turkish Riviera is the fourth reason why traveling to Turkey is filled with so much opportunity. It boasts of luxury Turkish hotels, warm Mediterranean weather, beautiful beaches, and fine sands. Because of these features, this part of the nation is considered a famous holiday destination during summer. Lastly, Turkey is known for its exceptional wine and delicious cuisine. Turkish dishes are comprised of locally grown products, cooked along with a blend of spices. The dishes of Turkey are cooked with spices to

Adam Singleton asked:

As one of the world’s most culturally unique holiday destinations, it’s hard to pin down Turkey into any specific continental camp. On one hand, it’s strongly rooted in its Middle Eastern origins and still basks in its rich Ottoman heritage. On the other, Turkey is a fiercely modern, secular state that bridges the divide between Europe and Asia with ease. However, the only real way to evaluate this intriguing country’s significance to the modern world is to visit – and any holiday in Turkey is guaranteed to be an unforgettable one.

Turkey’s diverse geographical regions mean that a visit to the country could incorporate a city break, mountain trek and seaside holiday all in one. Fly to Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, and experience its stunning cityscape, vibrant arts scene and exciting café culture. Take in Turkey’s diverse museums and art galleries, including the Istanbul Modern, Istanbul Archaeology Museum, the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum and the Pera Museum.

Or if you’re interested in finding some valuable antiques while you’re on your holiday in Turkey, don’t miss The Grand Bazaar, which dates back to 1455. Of course no trip to Istanbul would be complete without a visit to the Haghia Sofia, a spectacular building which was one of the greatest Christian Cathedrals of the Middle Ages before being converted into an imperial mosque in 1453. Today, it is known as the Ayasofya Museum.

Additionally, make sure you visit Turkey’s often-overlooked capital of Ankara. Although smaller and less cosmopolitan than Istanbul, Ankara is home to many museums, important Roman archaeological sites and a range of public parks. Moreover, Ankara is home to Turkey’s foremost performing arts organisations, including the Turkish State Opera and Ballet, Turkish State Theatre and the Turkish Presidential Symphony Orchestra.

And if fun in the sun is what you’re after, make sure that you spend some time on the “Turkish Riviera”. The Turkish Riviera is the name used to denote Turkey’s Antalya Province and Mugla provinces, and offers tourists several hundred kilometres of sandy beaches and sparkling blue waters. With a range of ancient fishing towns, harbours, memorial tombs and coves found along the shore, the Turkish Riviera is one of the country’s most beautiful – and most visited – destinations.

As a result of Turkey’s newfound popularity with holidaymakers, its beach resorts and city hotels tend to be quite costly. So if you’re hoping to take a trip to Turkey without blowing your bank account, it’s probably a good idea to look up villas in Turkey, which you’ll often be able to rent for a lower price than other forms of accommodation. Many villas in Turkey come complete with swimming pools, gardens and space to sleep upwards of four people, so can come in especially handy of you’re on holiday with a large group of friends or family – so you’ll all be able to enjoy the magic of Turkey together in comfort.

Les Calvert asked:

The Turkish Property Market

Historically, it was nearly impossible in most instances for a foreign national to purchase real estate in Turkey. Indeed, for the most part, Turkey maintained a nearly absolutely blanket prohibition against foreign nationals having the ability to directly purchase and own real estate in that country.

In 2003, the Turkish government liberalized the laws pertaining to the ownership of real estate in that country. The actual steps taken by the Turkish government to liberalize the real estate ownership laws in that country as far as foreign nationals are concerned is discussed in a bit more detail later.

With the liberalization of real estate laws in Turkey, a growing number of foreign nationals are taking a second look at the possibilities and opportunities that exist when it comes to real estate in that country.

Investment Property in Turkey

Only in the past couple of years has there been any real movement in regard to investment by foreign nationals in Turkish real estate. Of course, the primary reason that this is a development of recent times is the fact that Turkish laws regarding foreign ownership of real estate were very restrictive until the past few years.

In any event, a growing number of foreign investors are turning towards Turkey when it comes to real estate acquisitions. While there certainly is not a flood of foreign money being invested in Turkish real estate at this juncture, more and more foreign investors are taking a close look at what real estate investment opportunities are now available in Turkey.

With that said and understood, many industry analysts maintain that now is the perfect time for a foreign national to take steps towards investing in real estate in Turkey. With Turkey’s admission into the European Union, Turkey will be able to reap many economic benefits that are attendant to being a part of the EU. This likely will translate positively for men and women who have invested in real estate in that country.

Residential Real Estate in Turkey – Single Family Properties

With the relaxation of Turkish laws governing the foreign ownership of real estate, some foreign nationals are now taking a look at the prospect of buying residential property in that country. While the movement of foreign nationals towards buying residential property in that country has not been overwhelming at this juncture, there is an ever increasing number of foreign nationals who are buying residential real estate in Turkey with each passing month.

Most of the residential real estate that is being purchased in Turkey by foreign nationals is located in more of the resort communities in that nation.

Residential Real Estate in Turkey – Apartments

When it comes to the purchase of residential property in Turkey, apartments are serving as solid investments that people from other nations are beginning to purchase to gain a foothold in the Turkish residential property market. There are a wide array of different types of apartments available to sale in Turkey at this point in time. For example, there are very high end properties that are luxurious. At the other end of the spectrum, there are more moderately priced units that are suitable for men and women who find themselves finding a part of the year in Turkey in business and desire a second residence for their time in country.

Holiday Property in Turkey

The newest movement that has occurred as a result of the liberalization of real estate ownership laws in Turkey is the advent of foreign nationals making the purchase of residential properties to be used for vacation purposes. (More information about the liberalization of the laws governing the foreign ownership of real estate is discussed shortly.)

With Turkey’s entry into the EU, a growing number of Europeans are examining the country as a location for holiday travel. Historically, Turkey was not particularly a destination of choice when it came to holiday travel by Europeans. Generally, the same was true for tourists from many other locales around the world.

However, in recent years, more and more foreign nationals have marked Turkey as a definite tourist destination. In addition, Turkish governmental officials as well as business and civic leaders have taken strong steps towards promoting Turkey as a travel and holiday destination.

Because of this movement, a notable number of men and women are now purchasing vacation residences in the form of apartments, villas and other types of houses in Turkey. For the first time, some foreign nationals are purchasing residential property in Turkey that they are using for their own travel needs. In turn, these same people are then turning around and letting these residences to other people during those times of the year that these foreign owners are not using these properties for their holiday purposes. In short, many foreign investors are now taking the initiative to turn their own vacation properties in Turkey into profit generating enterprises.

Specific steps to buying real estate property in Turkey back to top

Historically, it was very difficult for a foreign national to purchase and own real estate in Turkey. Indeed, overall it was nearly impossible for a foreign national to directly own a freehold (or complete and transferable) interest in real estate in Turkey. The laws restricting foreign ownership of real estate in Turkey had been longstanding.

In 2003, the Turkish government significantly liberalized the laws governing the ownership of real estate by foreign nationals in that country. Specifically, the Turkish government enacted what is known as a reciprocity law when it comes to the ownership of real estate by foreign nationals in that country.

The new law in Turkey governing the foreign ownership of real estate essentially provides that if a Turkish citizen can purchase and invest in real estate in the country from which the foreign national comes from, that same foreign national can then, in turn, purchase and own real estate within Turkey. Thus, citizens from many countries — from the United States to the United Kingdom and many other nations in between — can now purchase and own real estate in Turkey.

The Turkish government moved to change its extremely restrictive real estate laws in order to bring it more in line with the statutes and regulations governing real estate ownership that are in place in the other nations that make up the European Union.

Even with the easing of restrictions pertaining to the ownership of real estate by foreign nationals in Turkey, there are areas within Turkey in which foreign nationals are prohibited from purchasing and owning real estate all together. For example, foreign nationals cannot make the purchase of or otherwise own real estate that is in the vicinity of military bases and other similar sensitive locations. It is important for a foreign national to pay close attention to these prohibitions so that he or she does not become involved in a real estate sales transaction that might need to be scuttled in the long run due to the location of the subject property itself.

When it comes to purchasing property in Turkey, it is vital that a very thorough title search be undertaken to make absolutely certain that the property is free and clear from an absolute and complete transfer to a purchaser. Turkish property is notorious for being encumbered by liens and other blemishes to titles. Therefore, it absolutely is imperative that a foreign national who is seeking to purchase and own real estate in Turkey obtain the services of a capable lawyer or solicitor who can work to ensure that the property is not encumbered.

The first step in the real estate purchase process for a foreign national (or anyone else in Turkey) is an oral offer on a piece of real estate. If the offer is accepted by the seller, a preliminary contract is drafted and executed between the buyer and seller. At this juncture, the buyer is obliged to place a deposit on the property. Generally, the deposit amount that is placed is between 4% and 10%. The deposit is non-refundable if the seller backs out of the deal without cause. (Cause for withdrawal includes a failure by the seller to provide clear title to the property or the seller abandoning the deal.)

The final contract for sale of real estate in Turkey actually is executed at the Land Registry Office. A new title or deed is then applied for directly at the Land Registry Office. The new title and deed usually will be issued to the purchaser of the real estate within about three months.

One final factor that a real estate purchaser needs to keep in mind when buying property in Turkey. Unlike virtually anywhere else in the world, earthquake insurance is compulsory in nearly all locations of the country. Therefore, a purchaser of real estate in that country will want to make sure that this expense is factored into the overall costs of buying real estate in Turkey. Generally, the costs of such insurance is not prohibitive when it comes to buying real estate in Turkey.

Property Abroad always recommends using a Solicitor or Lawyer.

Travel Guru asked:

The Finest Beaches of Turkey

When people think of grand beaches, they generally think of places like California, Florida or Hawaii, but they rarely think of a country like Turkey. Despite being under-publicised, holidays to Turkey offer a wide variety of beaches that stretch along the Mediterranean Sea.

In this article, we will take a look at the top ten beaches found in Turkey.

Patara Beach: Patara is the longest beach in the Mediterranean, and was hailed by The Sunday Times as the best beach in the world. Accommodations are limited, loungers and umbrellas are available to rent, and it is backed by ancient ruins and dunes.

Oludeniz Beach: Oludeniz is Turkey’s most famous beach, and therefore in peak seasons, is the most crowded. There are good hotels to stay at, very good bars, water sports available, scuba diving and is surrounded with resorts.

Olimpos: If you want a more relaxed, romantic atmosphere, this is the beach for you. It is far more secluded and smaller than the other two beaches mentioned so far, and is backed by a forest, which is filled with Roman ruins.

Side: Side is only an hour away from the airport, and is very popular with holiday groups. There is a village and a beach filled with fine sand, as well as some Roman ruins to explore nearby.

Iztuzu Beach: Iztuzu Beach is a national conservation area, and is one of the last breeding places in Europe of the Loggerhead Sea Turtle. It can only be reached by a 20 minute boat ride from the nearby town of Dalyan. There is a lot of beach, and the water is warm and shallow. Nearby, there are some cliff tombs you can explore as well.

Cleopatra’s Beach (Alanya): Alanya is one of the biggest resorts found in Turkey, and Cleopatra’s beach is splendid and very popular. The beach and resort offer great accommodations, facilities and things to do. There is also an old fortress nearby.

Kemer: Kemer is basically a seaside town built along the sea. There are a number of small beaches you can visit, as well as many day-trip opportunities. Most of the beaches are made up of small pebbles, although there are a few with sandy beaches.

Bodrun: Bodrun is home to the original mausoleum, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It is also home to the Castle of St Peter, which used to be a crusader fortress but now serves as the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. The beaches in town are small, but many people visit them as an afterthought to sightseeing.

Pamucak Beach: Most of the beach is public, but on the south side there are some resorts. It is close to the Aqua Fantasy water park, and there is a small hotel where you can get refreshments and amenities. The water is pretty choppy, and there aren’t any life guards, so be careful.

Sinop: Sinop has many fascinating things to see, and the beaches are small. Because the water comes from the Black Sea, it can be rather chilly too.

Jessica Nielson asked:

Holiday season is fast approaching and its the time of the year when we travel abroad to spend our leisure time having fun and having the best times of our lives. Though the holidays may be months away, making holiday plans as early as 5 months prior to the start of the holiday is mostly encouraged. That will help you get cheap holiday package deals and making sure that you get a slot.

Usually, we decide on our holiday budget and our travel destination.
